#47 – PJ Harvey

Well PJ Harvey is back. Big time! Her new album, Let England Shake, came out last week and it’s been garnering good review after good review. Seeing as there are so many out there, I shan’t add to them. Instead here are the two singles that have come off the album. The first is the rather excellent ‘Written On The Forehead’. Her voice has got a tremolo effect that combines with her almost falsetto singing to give the song a certain vulnerability. The reggae influenced backing track is excellent and the whole song slides along delightfully.

Next is ‘The Words That Maketh Murder’. While it also has a chugging, reggae-infused instrumentation, it is a darker and more ominous song. It is also more transparently anti-war. I think it benefits from this though. While it is barely longer than ‘Written On The Forehead’, it is more loaded and it achieves more. It does need a couple of listens though, as the song definitely ripens with age.

If you like what you hear, go and buy her album. Or you can see her playing in London on the 27th & 28th of February if you’ve got a bit of spare cash. And by a bit, I mean rather a lot.
