#115 – Songs About Athletes

This is a little bit of light writing, if I’m going to be honest. I was listening to Mother’s Milk yesterday and I heard the song Magic Johnson and thought to myself “I wonder how many song there are that reference sportspeople”. It turns out there are, rather predictably, tons. These three are ones that I could think of without too much effort, so they are what you get. Luckily, they all happen to be pretty good. As far as the Weezy goes, any opportunity to put him on the blog is embraced with open arms. So, without further ado, here are my three lazy sportspeople referencing songs…

Lil’ Wayne – Kobe Bryant

Yup, Lil’ Wayne likes Kobe Bryant. The line “He the greatest on the court // And I’m the greatest on the verse” says a lot about the rest of the song: he bums out (no homo) Kobe and its a great song.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Magic Johnson [Buy]

It’s another basketball reference (I looked for some polo/hockey/fives ones and there weren’t any sadly) and it’s a great example of how good RHCP used to be. The frantic vocals and drumming and the trademark funk guitar/bass combo of Fruiscante and Flea.

LL Cool J – Mama Said Knock You Out [Buy]

This final song isn’t so much about Muhammed Ali, but it does reference him. And it’s a quality song (made it on to Idris Elba’s How Hip Hop Changed The World, I’ll have you know). By all means suggest more ideas for good sportspeople songs. I’d love to hear a country song written about a famous cowboy or something… If you’ve got some spare time you know what to do!
